Sunday Nov 29, 2020
You will learn about:
- The distinction between a commitment and a promise
- Why most of us are scared of making a promise
- Using the promise as a weapon
- Micromanagement Vs. Micro-give-a-shit-ness
- Generating a culture of promise
Show Notes:
Making a promise is a transformational act; one way or another, whether you break it or follow through, you are writing the future. Our bodies understand the impact, making a promise has a neurological effect on us, and that’s probably why most of us avoid making any promises at all. But one of the most powerful things you can have in your business is a culture of promise, so we’re going to break down why that is the case and how leaders can start making productive promises that transform the cultures of our organizations.

- The significance of distinction
- The distinction between taking a stand and taking a position
- Getting stuck listening to the “shoulds”
- When Dan got called out in prison
- The questions and conversations that you’re avoiding
- You don’t need to ditch your opinions, they just can’t be what’s driving you
- “People settle for a level of despair they can tolerate and call it happiness.”
Show Notes:
What’s the difference between taking a stand and being positioned?
This isn’t a distinction many of us think about, but the difference is more important than you might realize. So, we work through this question this week: what does it mean to take a stand, why is it better than being positioned, how do we do it, and how do we become the kind of person who is willing to take a stand?

Sunday Nov 15, 2020
Sunday Nov 15, 2020
You will learn about:
- Acute Complaints vs. Chronic Complaints
- Why chronic complaints can be your best friend
- The fantasy we create with our complaints
- If you want more freedom, more responsibility and ownership come with it
- Why you have to shift when you become a leader
Show Notes:
“I don’t want to do this.”
“You always make us do things we don’t want to do.”
“You just don’t understand.”
We’ve all heard things like this before. Most of us have said things like this before. But what if we told you that chronic complaints can serve you and your business? We actually aren’t against all complaints — some acute complaints can be productive, when communicated properly — but when chronic complaints come up, it’s because there’s a problem or a mindset that isn’t being addressed. And the solution to chronic complaints isn’t just shutting up or changing your attitude; it’s to get honest about why you keep avoiding the solution to your problem. That complaint might just be your best friend.

Becoming an Accessible Leader | with Adrian Koehler & Dan Tocchini
Sunday Nov 08, 2020
Sunday Nov 08, 2020
You will learn about:
- Acknowledging the power differential
- Why an accessible leader will never be surprised by a problem
- The shape of your relationships: wide or narrow?
- The mission is more important than the ego
- You can’t become accessible after a problem occurs
- Why eager leaders are dangerous
- Being an accessible leader in your family
- How to assess whether or not you are an accessible leader
Show Notes:
So many of the leaders we talk to say they have an “open door policy” for their team. You’ve probably heard that from a boss in the past, too. But, in practice, did you actually feel like you could come to them? Most of the time, this is really just lip service — because being an accessible leader starts long before someone knocks on your door to have a conversation.

Distrust within Leadership Teams | with Adrian Koehler & Dan Tocchini
Sunday Nov 01, 2020
Sunday Nov 01, 2020
You will learn about:
- Leadership culture & the leadership team’s role in shaping it
- How a culture of avoiding conflict creates problems
- How our self-doubt manifests as distrust.
- What you have to do before you can have a breakthrough as a team
- How you can help solve distrust issues if you’re part of the leadership team, but not the person in charge
- Coaching people towards a growth mindset
Show Notes:
When we start working with a company, we almost always start in the same place: finding where the distrust is in the leadership team.
And the distrust is pretty much always there. If an organization wants to change and it’s not happening, that is almost certainly because there is some kind of disconnect in the leadership team. And if we don’t address this root problem first, treating the symptoms won’t help the organization in the long-term.
